Supernatural re-wires and re-wilds the city, giving magical properties to natural materials in historical locations. Wood, water and soil act as musical instruments, when you approach and touch them.
Taking cues from Bristol’s occult history, Supernatural is a series of magical/musical instruments sited at unlikely locations of historic interest around Bristol. The instruments appear as common natural materials – plants, soil, water – identified by a graphical symbol.
Identifying sound as a powerful and intuitive way of connecting, playing and revealing meaning, the artists envisage Supernatural as a kind of magi-mix in which players combine electrically-generated tones with found sounds and bespoke beats intended to conjure the natural and mystical history specific to each location.
An accompanying web app provides a map of locations, looped rhythm tracks to play alongside the instruments, and historical background information.
