Playable City Weekend – Seoul 2017

The Project

From the 27-29 October 2017 in the heart of the bustling city of Seoul, Playable City hosted a suite of specially created Playable City Experiences during the Seoul Architecture Biennale. This mini festival of Urban Play invited the public to explore and reimagine public space along and surrounding the Cheonggyecheon Stream in downtown Seoul. Based around the themes of the Connected City for the British Council Korea Season, the specially commissioned projects will facilitate members of the public to explore their environment in new and exciting ways.

In line with the goals of the overall Connected City, the overall experience delivered over the three days  developed and created new digitally enabled participatory works where general audiences and local communities connected to their city in new ways, re-imagined new scenarios of use for well know areas, and contributed to placemaking and wellbeing in the city centre.

The Process

In early 2017, Watershed did a recce in Seoul, visiting local sites and working with local artists to choose a site for the project and to think about curation and commissioning.

Later in the year, an Open Call chose five local creatives/groups  to create six brand new participatory Playable City experiences for the event. To ensure quality games and experiences for participants of the Connected City, all the artists were mentored by Playable City Producers and Associates throughout the process, who together combine many years expertise in creating unique experiences for the public to explore, reimagine, and reconnect to familiar sites.
