Salem Astana Launches in Kazakhstan

Where is everyone rushing off to in the mornings? Where are the best places to meet friends and hang out? What was here before? What are everyone’s dreams for the future?

Around the world, cities have been waking up and talking to their residents (Japan, Singapore, UK, France and the USA) via the innovative project Hello Lamp Post, winner of the first Playable City Award in 2013.

Now the neighbourhoods of Astana, Kazakhstan are coming to life and they want to learn everything there is to know about life in Astana. Salem Astana, a bespoke version of the internationally acclaimed Hello Lamp Post, launched today in Astana.

Hello Astana has been commissioned by The British Council as part of their Future Creative Programme. It is produced by Watershed and and it is supported by the Urban Development Centre and the City of Astana.

Hello Lamp Post was created by the always inventive PAN Studio. Earlier this year, designer Sam Hill and Playable City Producer Hilary O’Shaughnessy went to Astana to understand the city and adapt the project to a local context. You can read about their trip in their process blog.

You can read more about the project, available in English, Russian and Kazakhstan on http://www.salemastana2017.kz/en/.
